Why Did I Take the ICF ACC Exam?
Let’s start with the most obvious question: why did I take the ICF ACC exam?
The answer is simple: I wanted to become a certified coach. But let’s get one thing straight before we dive in. Getting an ICF credential does not automatically make you a profitable coach. At the end of the day, it is still up to you and your expertise to build a sustainable, impactful business. But, in a digital world where anyone can slap “Life Coach” on their Instagram bio without a credential, having a legitimate ICF credential definitely helps you stand out.
So, what is coaching to you? I ask because I recently went through the grinder to get my ACC credential, and let me tell you, it was a journey.
Is the ICF ACC Exam Hard?
Honestly, harder than I expected. Here is the non-sugarcoated truth about how I passed it: how I prepped, what the exam was actually like, and the computer glitch that nearly gave me a heart attack.
The short version: Yes, the ICF ACC exam is tougher than it looks, but it is passable. I passed on about 20 hours of study spread over less than two weeks. Most of that time went into drilling the ICF Core Competencies and Code of Ethics, taking all the mock tests I could find, and reviewing my wrong answers. The exam is situational, not a memory test, so practice beats reading every time.
How I Prepared for the ICF ACC Exam in Under Two Weeks
Like many professionals juggling an intense full-time corporate role and external passions, my bandwidth is tight. I couldn’t block out months of study time, so I had to be ruthlessly efficient and make every hour count. My preparation took less than two weeks and about 20 hours in total.
My top study resources: Because of my limited time, I needed a one-stop solution. I had done a lot of research, and a friend recommended the ExpertCoach.Co ICF ACC Mastery Program. Full transparency: I didn’t feel like just passively reading through the documents on the ICF website would make me ready for the exam, so I signed up for the platform.
Here is exactly how I structured my ACC exam study plan:
- 6 to 7 hours: Official ICF Code of Ethics and ICF Core Competencies video series. These are fantastic for giving you a broader thought process on ICF’s coaching principles. However, if you are strictly trying to optimize your prep time for the actual exam, you can skip them (sorry, ICF!).
- 10 hours: The ExpertCoach.Co platform and ICF website. I spent the bulk of my time aggressively studying the ethics and competencies with exam tips through the platform. I personally found the core competency categories a bit confusing, and I kept mixing them up. The flashcards were an absolute game-changer for that. I realized very quickly that I hadn’t truly digested the material until I started drilling those cards. I found them so helpful I was even practicing them while taking a bath (pro tip: just remember not to drop your phone).
- 3 hours: Mock tests and review. I took all the mock tests on the platform and spent a significant amount of time reviewing my wrong answers, which was incredibly helpful.
When I first scanned the ICF materials, I thought, “Sure, I understand all of this.” But taking those mock tests was a massive reality check. You do not truly understand the application until you are forced to choose an answer. If you take nothing else from this, take this: do not skip the practice tests.
What the ICF ACC Exam Is Actually Like
I took my test in person at an old test center in Fortune Centre, Singapore. It was a bizarre, nostalgic experience: going back into a computer lab with other students taking entirely different exams, surrounded by cameras everywhere, having to raise our hands if we had a question.
As for the exam itself? It was harder than I expected.
Do not expect simple memory questions like, “Which of the following is not an ICF Core Value?” This is not a memory test. The questions are highly situational (things that are especially likely to happen in the real world) and reflect complex coaching dilemmas. For example, there were a surprising number of questions about exactly when to refer a client to therapy, and how to manage conflicts of interest between a client and their employer. There were questions where I stared at the screen, unsure which option to pick between two answers that both looked right.
How I handled the anxiety: physician, heal thyself! In the final week, I leaned heavily on my own self-coaching. If I can help my clients manage their anxiety and step into their power, I can do it for myself. I just had to believe in myself as a professional coach.
My Top 3 ICF ACC Exam Tips for Exam Day
If you are a coach putting off booking your exam, I have to ask: are we talking about procrastination again, coach? (A very common topic we handle in our practices, isn’t it?) If you are serious about this, just book it.
Here are my top three ICF ACC exam tips for the big day:
- Review the core documents: Take a quick final look at the official ICF guidelines (specifically the Code of Ethics, Insights and Considerations for Ethics, and Referring a Client to Therapy). Go through your wrong answers on mock exams quickly.
- Trust your gut: lean on your coaching expertise. Make sure you are fully familiar with the ICF Code of Ethics, and trust that you will be able to answer the majority of the questions.
- Stay calm: Go through all questions first, answer the ones you are confident about and flag the others. This way you can review the tricky questions with less time pressure. And even if you hit a surprise (see below), keep your composure.
The Glitch: Playing Hide-and-Seek With My ICF Exam Result
Usually, when you finish the exam, your result pops up on the screen immediately. Mine did not.
I experienced a massive computer glitch. My result was completely missing. I checked with the test center staff, Pearson VUE online support, and ICF support multiple times with no clear answers. Eventually, Pearson VUE threw their hands up and asked me to just retake the test.
I refused to give up. I asked around in an ICF ACC/PCC coach group, got a tip to reach out to local ICF members, and eventually the ICF support team looked into my case again. Finally, I received a highly confusing email from Pearson VUE saying they had arranged a new test for me, followed immediately by a second email saying I passed. 😅
I had to reach out to support again just to confirm that yes, they found my result, and yes, I passed.
So if your screen goes blank at the end of your test: do not panic. It happens. You will eventually get your result back.
Final Word
Passing hasn’t radically changed my day-to-day life. I am still surrounded by amazing coaches, both with and without credentials. But it has absolutely solidified my confidence and enhanced my professionalism as a coach.
Trust your instincts, fully digest the guidelines, and good luck! 😉
